Digital Media Literacy

During our opening conversation yesterday we said that digital media literacy was the ability to access, analyze, critically evaluate, and produce communication in a variety of digital forms.
What place does publishing have in developing this literacy?

I find that publishing is becoming more and more critical to this generation of youth. They publish images, ideas, music often without critically analyzing what they are posting. Any course in digital literacy should encourage students to use a critical eye to view their own postings and those of others.

Having said that - I also beleive that making education relevent to students by giving them a forum to share their skils and abilities is also ciritical. When students are making products with an audience other than the teacher/parents, I beleive there is more of a desire to create authentic products to the best of their abilities.

Publishing our students' digital media communication products and projects (and our own) can be useful in several key ways, as I see it. When you know that your video, lets say, will be posted to a readily available spot (youtube, etc) it then ramps up the pressure to produce a quality end product. A student will likely put more effort into the project knowing it will be seen by their friends, and others.
