Smartphones

Smartphones are cell phones, video cameras, computers and portable music players all mashed into one and are quickly becomes extremely popular. In the past we have seen the effect that that these tools have had on our students lives.

What will happen when they have it all in the palm of their hand? Will we spend our days confiscating this technology or is there a way that we can use it as a tool in our classrooms?

Smartphones, as with any technology, will become another form of communication that will be hard to ignore in the classroom. I think the challenge for educators will be to recognize and appreciate such technological devices as a new way to present "text." We define text very loosely in curriculum objectives and we do so for a reason. "Texts" and how we communicate are in a constant flux. The way we read, communicate, listen, express, etc, will continue to evolve. The smartphone is part of this evolution, and it is necessary to recognize this new technology and challenge students to not only use it for educational purposes, but to analyze how this new tool changes how we interact in our society, etc. Further, as an evolution, the technological tools that our society uses to express themselves and communicate will continue to change. We need to open and be flexible for that in our schools.
